Valley Rails is open!
“What is Valley Rails?”, you may be wondering. I hope. VR is a project that aims to document the railway history of Canada’s Ottawa Valley and adjoining regions. It will also touch wider historical matters from time to time.
The project has two essential parts: the content pages of the website valleyrails.ca and this blog.
I know there are many sites about railway history. You can find my very favourites on the VR Resources page. Valley Rails won’t duplicate what’s available elsewhere. Instead, my intent is to fill some gaps. And to point out some others.
To begin with, the website features a downloadable copy of Tracing the Lines, my history of the railways of eastern Ontario and west Québec. To complement its text, the book uses maps to show the growth of the rail network and who owned what. You can check it out here.
Over the weeks and months to come, I will post expanded versions of my articles published in Branchline magazine over the past few years. As well, I’ll share new research findings about valley lines.
The blog will announce each new page or article posted. That won’t be all, though. On the blog I intend to publish shorter texts, maps, and pictures that I hope you will find interesting
